Il y a 20 ans paraissait La Llorona, le premier album de Lhasa de Sela. On connaît la suite: le disque s’écoulera à près d’un demi-million d’exemplaires et aura un impact considérable dans notre paysage musical.
Pour souligner cet anniversaire marquant et célébrer l’œuvre de cette immense artiste, Audiogram, Opak et le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal s’unissent afin de présenter le spectacle La route chante – Les 20 ans de La Llorona.
Pour l’occasion, les musiciens ayant participé à l’enregistrement de cet album culte ont accepté de se réunir à nouveau. Le guitariste et compositeur Yves Desrosiers, le bassiste Mario Légaré, l’accordéoniste Didier Dumoutier et le batteur François Lalonde interpréteront les chansons de l’album, ce qu’ils n’ont pas fait depuis plus de 15 ans. Joe Grass complétera la formation à la pedal steel.
« Bien sûr, nous ne serons pas avec notre regrettée petite sœur de la musique comme à l’époque, mais avec plusieurs interprètes bien senti.e.s qui sauront faire revivre ces chansons, explique Yves Desrosiers. Laissons alors chanter cette route, juste pour l’entendre encore un peu… »
Mis en scène par Émilie Laforest, à qui l’on doit notamment la mise en scène du spectacle hommage à Richard Desjardins, présenté lors des récentes FrancoFolies, le spectacle se déroulera en deux temps. La première partie sera consacrée à l’interprétation des pièces de La Llorona, telles qu’elles apparaissent sur le disque. La seconde sera composée de pièces tirées des albums The Living Road et Lhasa ainsi que de chansons ayant inspiré la chanteuse.
Parmi les artistes qui participeront à ce spectacle présenté un soir seulement, mentionnons Marie-Pierre Arthur, Betty Bonifassi, Ariel Engle, Fred Fortin, Camélia Jordana, Plants and Animals, Amparo Sánchez et Patrick Watson. D’autres interprètes s’ajouteront à cette distribution relevée.
Lhasa ayant également fait carrière en France, le spectacle sera par ailleurs présenté le 3 décembre à la Philharmonie de Paris. Anouar Brahem, Dom La Nena, Safia Nolin et Patrick Watson y participeront, tout comme les musiciens originaux de La Llorona.

Twenty years ago marked the release of La Llorona, Lhasa de Sela’s first album. The rest is history: the record sold nearly half a million copies and had a significant impact in our musical landscape.
To celebrate this important anniversary and the work of this major artist, Audiogram, Opak and the Montreal International Jazz Festival are joining forces to present the concert La route chante – Les 20 ans de La Llorona.
On this occasion, the musicians who took part in the recording of this cult album are reuniting. Guitarist and composer Yves Desrosiers, bassist Mario Légaré, accordionist Didier Dumoutier and drummer François Lalonde will play the songs of the album, which hasn’t occured in more than 15 years. Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar will complete the lineup.
"Of course, we won’t be with our deeply missed little musical sister like before, but several very gifted singers will bring these songs back to life, " explains Yves Desrosiers. "So we shall let this road sing, just to listen to it a bit more…"
Directed by Émilie Laforest, to whom we owe the direction of the Richard Desjardins tribute concert presented during the most recent FrancoFolies, the show will be divided into two parts. The first part will feature all the tracks of La Llorona, played in the same order as on the record. The second part will feature tracks from the albums The Living Road and Lhasa as well as songs that inspired the singer.
Among the artists who will perform during this one-night-only concert, we can mention Marie-Pierre Arthur, Betty Bonifassi, Ariel Engle, Camélia Jordana, Plants and Animals, Amparo Sánchez, Fred Fortin and Patrick Watson. Other singers will be added later to this impressive lineup.
Since Lhasa had a career in France as well, the concert will also be presented on December 3rd at the Philharmonie de Paris. Anouar Brahem, Dom La Nena, Safia Nolin and Patrick Watson will perform then, with the original musicians of La Llorona.
