Il nous avait séduits avec Young/Old/Everything.In.Between, son premier album paru en 2015. Voilà qu’Elliot Maginot nous renverse avec Comrades, une nouvelle offrande foisonnante qui permet de constater le chemin parcouru, au propre et au figuré, l’artiste ayant depuis offert plus de 200 prestations dans une dizaine de pays, dont l’Australie.

Coréalisé en toute complicité par Elliot Maginot et Connor Seidel (Matt Holubowski, Coco Méliès, Soran), Comrades propose de riches atmosphères qui ont pour assise la voix agile et expressive de l’artiste. Oscillant entre mélancolie, espoir et résignation, ce dernier observe le monde qui l’entoure et s’interroge sur la détresse ambiante et le mal-être de sa génération. Des idéaux inatteignables aux compromis auxquels il faut se résoudre en passant par la fragilité des rapports humains, le regard qu’il porte est à la fois lucide et sensible.

De l’enlevante Common Place (Comrade I) et sa rythmique bondissante à la délicate Am I Here Now?, couchée sur un somptueux lit de cordes et de voix, l’album nous entraîne dans un univers jalonné d’envoûtantes trouvailles sonores. Les arrangements de saxophone qui ornent quelques titres leur confèrent une couleur singulière.

Doté d’une voix expressive capable de véhiculer les plus fines nuances, l’artiste construit des harmonies élaborées, n’hésitant pas à convoquer ses amies chanteuses, dont Mélanie et Stéphanie Boulay, Sarah Bourdon, Ariane Brunet et Marie-Claudel Chénard, pour ponctuer la touchante Eugene, inspirée par son grand-père, la lumineuse Let Me In ou encore la rassembleuse Second Light.

L’auteur-compositeur-interprète a le don de concocter des couplets riches en émotions et des refrains fédérateurs qui soulèvent et transportent. Chez lui, les ballades ouatées (Stay Gold) et les mélodies teintées d’une douce tristesse (Heart of Beauty) se glissent parmi des airs eighties pleinement assumés (Purging Days). Elliot Maginot atteint des sommets d’intensité sur Call Your Mother, qui passe du recueillement à une finale jubilatoire.

Coproduced by Elliot Maginot in alliance with Connor Seidel (Matt Holubowski, Coco Méliès, Soran), Comrades proposes rich atmospheres based on the artist’s agile and expressive voice. Oscillating between melancholy, hope and resignation, he observes the world around him and wonders about the ambient distress and uneasiness of his generation. From unattainable ideals to the compromises to be resolved with, by way of the frailty of human relationships, his gaze is both lucid and sensitive.

From the spirited Common Place (Comrade I) with its lively rhythm, to the Am I Here Now?, laid out for us on a sumptuous bed of chords and vocals, the album takes us into a world bordered by enchanting sound finds. The saxophone arrangements that adorn some of the titles lend them a singular colour.

Gifted with an expressive voice capable of conveying the finest nuances, the artist builds elaborate harmonies, never hesitating to summon his friends and signers, which include Mélanie and Stéphanie Boulay, Sarah Bourdon, Ariane Brunet and Marie-Claudel Chénard, to punctuate the touching Eugene, inspired by his grandfather, the luminous Let Me In or even the rallying Second Light.

The singer-songwriter and author has the gift of concocting emotion-rich verses and unifying refrains that uplift and move you. With him, soft ballads (Stay Gold) and melodies tinged with a sweet sadness (Heart of Beauty) slide in among unrepentant Eighties airs (Purging Days). Elliot Maginot reaches peaks of intensity in Call Your Mother, which passes from contemplation to a jubilant finale.
